Local Youth to Participate in Queer-Oriented Magazine Release Party
* Edward Little GSA, Outright L-A, New Beginnings
* Queer Youth Magazine release party
* Cafe Bon Bon, 205 Main St.
* Saturday, May 26, 7 pm
On May 26, Saturday, 7 pm at Cafe Bon Bon (205 Main St, Lewiston) there will be a magazine release party for local queer youth.
A desire to connect with and give a voice to local queer youth led to
collaboration between Edward Little High School, Outright L-A and New Beginnings. Youth worked together, wrote out their feelings, and fundraised to help get this message across. They assisted with the layout, editing and design of the 'zine' (short for magazine, usually a self-published anthology of art and text). The idea was to create and publish a small magazine of stories and poetry about the lives, interests, and difficulties of area youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered or allies to this population. The word Queer is an all-encompassing term now used in an effort to reclaim a positivity regarding the homosexual community.
The purpose of this project is to let people know that queer youth exist and illuminate the realities they face based upon their sexual
orientation: disconnection, rage, joy, homelessness, frustration, love. It also points out the basic need to be seen, heard and accepted. This is a chance to open a dialog, to empower these youth to search their feelings and express themselves, and to show pride, individuality and power.
