Following an action that resulted an estimated $30,000 of damage to equipment at one of New Englands most polluting businnesses, the West Old Town Landfill, the FBI is joining
the Old Town police in investigating this incident of what they are calling "environmental terrorism". ELF and GA were spraypainted on equipment.

George Smith of the Sportsman Alliance of Maine recently ran an editorial in the Kennebec Journal calling for a crackdown on what he sees as a rash of "terrorism".

West Old Town, Maine - Members of the Earth Liberation Front vandalized at least a dozen large machines at the West Old Town Landfill, which is one of New England's worst polluters. Last winter ownership of the landfill was transferred from the Georgia-Pacific timber company to state hands in a behind closed doors deal which resulted in the expansion of the site and a sweet deal for Georgia-Pacific and Casella Waste Systems who now run the site. The machines had their ignitions ripped out, or superglue poured into them, tires were slashed, two buildings and many vehicles were spray painted, and the fuel in the equipments' tanks may have been tampered with. Officials say the damage could cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair.

FBI joins probe of landfill vandalism

OLD TOWN - The FBI is assisting Old Town police in investigating more than $30,000 worth of vandalism done on Sunday at the West Old Town Landfill.

The vandals left behind graffiti symbols used by environmental terrorist groups, and the FBI is urging landfill workers to be cautious of any suspicious activity.
