Hurricane Katrina has caused devastation on a scale our country has never seen. Over the past week, the response from people across the country and around the world has been one of concern and compassion for her victims and their families.

Yet, as the nation's majority responds to the hurricane victims with generosity, Michael Heath and his Christian Civic League are placing blame
for the disaster on America's gay and lesbian citizens and exploiting this tragedy to promote their own agenda.

On Tuesday, in the Christian Civic League's daily online newspaper, The Record, Michael Heath wrote:
"By an odd coincidence an enormous gay rights celebration was scheduled for New Orleans just as the worst natural disaster ever to strike our
nation was venting it's full fury on that helpless city. Over 150,000 homosexuals were expected to attend the event this year, and as in past
years, the French Quarter was to be filled with party goers... "

On Wednesday, after the League was "criticized for saying that Hurricane Katrina was the wrath of God against homosexuals", he said "Every man must decide for himself whether or not Hurricane Katrina brought the wrath of God down on New Orleans?."

This is just the type of deliberately misleading and inflammatory rhetoric Michael Heath and his Christian Civic League will use in the coming weeks in their campaign to defeat Maine's anti-discrimination law. The law, which was passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority of Maine legislators, bans discrimination based on sexual orientation. Michael Heath immediately launched a campaign to overturn it.

On November 8th we will be urging Maine voters to vote No on the repeal effort so that we can keep this important law on the books.

Week of Neighborhood Events Against Discrimination

WHEN?

From September 18 through 25, Mainers will be buzzing about:

* the need for Maine's anti-discrimination law; and
* the importance of voting NO on November 8.

WHY?

The Maine Won't Discriminate campaign will be launching its Neighborhood
Events Against Discrimination during this third week of September. These
Events will be fun and effective ways to have direct conversations with
our supporters-your friends and neighbors who oppose discrimination -- and
to motivate them to defeat the referendum this fall.

WHAT?

Neighborhood Events Against Discrimination can be any kind of neighborhood
or community gathering where hosts can talk directly with voters about the
need to defeat the referendum this fall. These events include house
parties, garden parties (it's just mid-September!), block parties, church
coffee hours, neighborhood association gatherings, college dorm parties,
forums, or any other kind of creative gathering you can think to host.

WHO?

Any person or group who is committed to ending discrimination based on
sexual orientation in Maine can (and should) sign up to host a
Neighborhood Event Against Discrimination. Even if you think that all of
your friends and neighbors are fair-minded and committed to this cause,
gather them together, inspire them to get involved in our Talk to Friends
& Neighbors campaign and motivate them to vote NO on November 8th. Choose
now to become an Ambassador For Fairness! Get others you know to join in
this campaign today!

We will win only if all opponents of discrimination get out to vote on
November 8th. So, in addition to inviting your relatives, friends,
neighbors and co-workers to your Event Against Discrimination, we also
would like you to invite the infrequent (non-Presidential year) voters on
your block or in your neighborhood. We need your help to talk to these
voters and motivate them to stand against discrimination on November 8th.
We'll help you identify these key supporters.

WHERE?

This is a statewide campaign, and we need Ambassadors For Fairness from
York to Aroostook, the western mountains to Down East Maine. Obviously, we
need more people to step up to the plate in the big cities, like Bangor,
Portland, Lewiston,Augusta and Biddeford, but no matter where you live, we
need you to become an active voice against discrimination. Help send the
message out loudly and strongly that Maine Won't Discriminate!
