Argument against divisive approach in secssionist discourse
Secession or Division?
There has been a lot of talk about secession and about the “red state/blue state” divide. At this point in our country and in our history, we can stand aside no longer and let the leaders and government of this country, which ever party they represent, continue their economic, cultural and religious imperialist attacks on other nations in our name, whether it be through bombs, sanctions or sweatshops. The federal government is no longer representing our interests, desires or needs here in the state of Maine, and anywhere else in our nation for that matter, unless you belong to the wealthy elite. The citizens of Maine are suffering, from lack of health care and education, from unemployment and poverty, from giant corporations that steal our land, our trees, our water and our right to lead a life of dignity and of freedom. Many of us have--or have lost--relatives and loved ones in Iraq, being put in harm’s way by a regime that cares not for us, but about profit and world domination. There is a lot to be angry about at this moment in history.
However, we should not let our anger be used by the corporate media’s portrayals of color coded maps, or of a unified, corporate-run government that poses as a two party democracy, to divide us against our neighbors, our families, or the citizens of this nation. The divide and conquer strategy has been used historically over and over again to neutralize the power we have as citizens and as members of our communities. Bosses used racism to divide workers and employed African-Americans as strike-breakers, stereotypes surrounding feminism has been used to turn men and women against each other, and waves of immigrants are subjected to violence and prejudice over the perceived loss of jobs, when the reality is that this economic system is used to pit people against each other so that they do not notice who it is that is actually reaping the benefits of all this strife. We are taught to fear and hate the Other—those who look, act or have different values than we do. The “red state/blue state” commentary about “Jesusland,” or “United States of New England” vs “the red occupation” come as no surprise in the face of this age old tactic of divide and conquer. If one even believes that the polling numbers are valid, we still have to admit that almost half of the people in the “red states” voted against Bush, and almost half of the citizens in the “blue states”—including Maine-- voted for Bush. By “Othering” those who didn’t vote the way we wanted them to, and reacting with anger and hatred, we are falling right into the trap that the government controlled media has set for us, and concentrating our energies against each other, rather than at the powers who are responsible for this conflict. It is, after all, the ideological divide between us and the Other that is the fuel for the Bush regime’s attack on the Arab world, and the fuel for hate crimes, religious intolerance, and prejudice within our own borders.
Anyone who has the courage to stand up in these dark times against economic, religious, and cultural tyranny, and “say not in our name,” should be commended. Those of us who want to exercise our constitutional right by seceding from a government who no longer represents us, and recognize that our two party “democracy” is just a cover for what is quickly becoming an oligarchy, should keep in mind that there is no Other—there’s only us, and our strength may lie in how well we are able to work together and identify with each other, and resist falling into the color coded net that has been laid out for us.

We need to build communities of resistance.

What I what to know is how will we complete such a task? Maine has a strong tradition of self-sufficiency and the ability to take care of it self. Maine has strong roots in essential trades that could still sustain the population of Maine, including forestry, agriculture and fishing. Fishing is a hurting industry and we could blame that on our dependence to out-of-state money and commercial irresponsibility. If we were to give our waters a few years brake, perhaps the fish populations could come back to a level that would supplement a local agriculture industry that focused on feeding local working people instead of tourist and yuppies. The forestry industry of Maine is far from sustainable, because we have given up our control of our forest to multinational corporations that are clear cutting the northern half of the state. In southern Maine the building and real estate industries are out of control. Suburban sprawl has infected a vast part of southern Maine and is on of the fastest growing suburban areas in the United States.
In order to create localized, sustainable industries in Maine, the people of Maine will need to change their consumptive habits. The state will also need to change its spending habits and lower income and property taxes. State taxes could be diverted to local municipalities, which would could hire local people and keep our money in each locality instead of sending it out-of-state. So we need consumers and the state to change their consumptive behaviors. The state, which is controlled by corporate money, will not change without citizens to demand. Citizens that benefit from inexpensive commodities and services will need good reason to spend more to keep money local.
What does this mean? I believe the answer is that people interested in seceding from the United States need to start educating the citizens of Maine and demanding that the state governments stop spending money in general and only locally when necessary. We need to start building stronger communities in Maine. We need to build communities of resistance to the federal government and the rich, not working class people, republicans or democrats.

While I mostly agree with what you say, there's room for many strategies. The U.S. is somewhat like Microsoft. It's too big and powerful and needs to be broken up. Maine's secession would be but the first of many. I see Maine's move, if should come to pass, giving courage to others. Washington state and Oregon would likely be next, or maybe right after Vermont. That would put a lot of pressure on California. Remember the Ernest Callenbach novel "Ecotopia"? Northern California, at the very least, would be eager to join Washington and Oregon in forming (with or without B.C.) a real-life Ecotopia. (Or maybe just another, independent, liberal capitalist state -- who knows).
Gigantism and centralized monopoly didn't work for the USSR (and isn't working for Microsoft), and it doesn't seem to be playing well in the U.S. I agree that name calling isn't very productive. But holding back the progressive advance of millions of Americans because their neighbors are ignorant and mean doesn't help either.
I don't know the ultimate answer -- and if I did, I wouldn't tell; everyone has to be free to find that on their own. But I do know that whatever happens next, it's going to be a bumpy ride no matter which course of action any of us choose. Interesting times, indeed!
Re: Secession or Division? Taking the dialogue further?

I just returned from VT where I used to live and the energy for autonomy seems to be growing stronger and more clearly focused - it was very inspiring! I agree that no "other" is going to do this for us - nor should "they." I would be happy to host a face to face get together to discuss taking some preliminary steps.
Also, in response to Riccardo, I recently re-read Ecotopia as well as Ecotopia Emerging which was written in the early eighties as a prequel to Ecotopia and which discusses how the work was done leading up to the Ecotopian state. While it is (obviously) outdated and overly simplistic it still offers some interesting and, I think, solid basic principles and maybe provides a good jumping off point for further discussion.
I hope to see this dialogue continue and look forward to hearing other thoughts on how that might happen - let's begin this work together!
