Because, you know, "Christians" where never rude or anything, not, like, shoving their religious beliefs down everybody's throats and legislating morality.
The Massachusetts Legislature deep-sixed a pro-marriage referendum proposal today.
Right - "Pro Marriage" - as long as it's between one male and one female, the fact that the civil part of a marriage (the only part that the government should officially recognize) is, in fact, a form of contract.
This is the functional equivalent of saying that business contracts can only happen between select groups.
Reflecting on the development in Massachusetts, League executive director Mike Heath said it is only a matter of time before Maine politicians eliminate the institution of marriage.
You mean like allowing people to enter into these 2 party civil contracts no mater what their sex, or legislating that NOBODY can get married?
Neither, I guess - I'm thinking what you mean is "The Maine legislature removes the intolerant and religiously based restrictions on a 2 party civil contract"
“They aren't going to be stopped in Maine by anything short of the truth. And the truth is that (homosexuality) religious extremism is perverse, deviant and disgusting (sexual) intellectual behavior that isn't a topic of discussion in polite and civil societies. If people want to do it in the privacy of their (home) church, temple or mosque then shame on them, but I'm not interested in stopping their boorish (bedroom) religious antics anymore than I'm interested in hearing about it."
OK, now that works for me.
So yea, you folks can have all the worshiping of invisible sky wizards you want, in your own homes and places of worship, but keep your morality off the books - this country is NOT a theocracy (yet…) and contract law should NOT be based on one groups idea of what is right.
Camenker said the pressure on legislators to vote against the marriage referendum was unbelievable.
Because, perhaps, people there don't want to have somebody else's religion shoved down their throats? No, I'm sure that it's because "The gays are very well financed and know how to apply pressure" - and the christian right is not and does not, they are just a small band of righteous god-fearing folk fighting for what they believe is right, not financed by the likes of televangelists and elements of the far-right wing business sector.
But, this one is my favorite:
"The Totalitarianism of Homosexuality."
Because the religious right never tries to impose their idea of how things should be done and useing the law to exclude all other viewpoints to the point of jailing those who disagree.
"Totalitarianism is a term employed by political scientists, especially those in the field of comparative politics, to describe modern regimes in which the state regulates nearly every aspect of public and private behavior."
Supporters of "Gay Marriage" are trying to allow people to do something, while opponents are preventing it because it goes against their idea as to what proper behavior is or should be. You tell me, which one is a better fit?
Now, a comment to supporters:
I have maintained for a long time that using the term "marriage" is a big mistake. "marriage" in the christian community is, in effect, a religious sacrament. As such, you are fighting a loosing semantic battle. Go with "Civil Union" with ALL the benefits of the civil marriage contract and call it good. If you truly want to be joined together as a single entity in the eyes of the law then what you call it is not relevant.
If you want sky wizard worshiping types to accept you into their hearts, homes and places of worship you are wasting your time and money on a loosing cause.
You must be joking...
